National Refugee Week provides a platform where positive images of refugees can be promoted in order to create a culture of welcome throughout the UK. Through the development of arts, information and social programmes within the week the ultimate aim is to create a better understanding between different communities and to encourage successful integration, enabling refugees to live in safety and to continue making a valuable contribution to the UK
Since 2001, Bristol Refugee Week Network has been working to provide a range of opportunities for all people in Bristol and beyond to meet each other and share time together.
The people who are in the network either provide services or other types of support to refugees that are living in Bristol. The network comprises of contributors from voluntary, independent and the public sector. The network and activities have gone from strength to strength because of the commitment of many people and organisations, and because of the interest of people living in Bristol.
Many of the events each year are free - please keep checking this site for updates about events for 2009.
The main aims and objectives for Bristol Refugee Week Network reflect those of National Refugee Week -they are:
1) To facilitate positive encounters between refugees and the general public in order to encourage greater understanding and overcome hostility.
2) To showcase the talent and expertise that refugees bring with them to the UK.
3) To provide information which raises awareness of the reality of refugee experiences.
4) To continue developing strong networks and links with others in Bristol and beyond so that the relationships and potential for development continues beyond Refugee Week.
Currently the network is coordinated by
Lorraine Ayensu - Team Manager Adult Community Care Directorate
